Surprisingly Common: Abdominal Discomfort Caused by Autonomic Nervous System Imbalance

At our clinic, we see many patients suffering from issues related to autonomic nervous system imbalance. Among these, a significant number report persistent abdominal discomfort.

Some have struggled with digestive issues since their high school years, enduring these problems for over a decade.

Despite taking digestive supplements and being mindful of their diet, they find little relief. Over time, anxiety about needing a restroom unexpectedly can make them avoid trains or highways. The fear of not having access to a toilet before work or meetings can trigger sudden abdominal pain. Some individuals in their 20s and 30s even resort to wearing adult diapers due to overwhelming anxiety.

These symptoms are closely linked to the autonomic nervous system. The balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems regulates gastrointestinal function. Therefore, these issues are not merely psychological or constitutional but are physical signs of autonomic imbalance.

In many medical settings, patients are told that autonomic nerves cannot be adjusted and are advised to manage stress, sleep well, and exercise. However, even with these efforts, many see no improvement, leading to frustration.

Through clinical experience, we have found that it is indeed possible to regulate the autonomic nervous system. While it may take time, improvement is achievable with persistence.

Particularly, symptoms like “feeling fine at home but experiencing sudden abdominal pain during commuting or classes” are indicative of situational anxiety stemming from autonomic dysfunction.

These issues are not due to personal weakness or character flaws. They are treatable physical conditions.

Many patients at our clinic have found relief from such symptoms. Our goal is to raise awareness of these issues and increase the number of practitioners who can provide effective treatment, helping more individuals regain their health.

We continue to dedicate ourselves to clinical practice, driven by the desire to alleviate these concerns for as many people as possible.
