③ Consideration on Mental Health Symptoms and Hypothyroidism
Conclusion
This article discusses the relationship between mental health symptoms and hypothyroidism and proposes approaches for their prevention and improvement. Both conditions tend to develop after a long latent period, making early care and preventive measures extremely important. Mental health symptoms in particular can place a heavy burden not only on the individual but also on their family. If appropriate support is not provided, caregiving can consume the family’s time and energy, putting everyone at risk of burnout.
I know firsthand how difficult this can be for families. Three years ago, the child of a close acquaintance experienced a sudden and severe decline in health after resorting to sleeping pills. He originally had a tic disorder and went through repeated episodes of anxiety, panic, and self-hatred, eventually leading to self-harm. His face became severely swollen, and he was eventually diagnosed with retinal detachment. Since car rides helped calm him, his mother would drive him during the day, and his father would take over at night after coming home from work. This routine continued for about two months. However, the family eventually reached their physical and emotional limit and began considering admission to a psychiatric hospital. When they visited a hospital for consultation, he was simply prescribed tranquilizers, which did not lead to any fundamental improvement.
As his condition worsened, I decided to take him into my own home and care for him for one month. While living together, I provided chiropractic treatments twice daily, along with behavioral therapy, and over the course of three weeks, his condition gradually improved. In the final week, I helped him prepare for returning to society by having him experience part-time work. After one month, I returned him to his mother, and today he is living a normal life. I was able to provide support because of my experience in treating the autonomic nervous system, but I believe there are many other families facing similar difficulties without such resources.
Mental health symptoms and hypothyroidism are not merely psychological issues—they may be deeply connected to dysfunctions in the nervous system. Before relying on medication, it may be possible to improve symptoms by addressing spinal misalignment and nerve compression and restoring physical balance. I hope more people will come to understand that it is possible to improve and prevent mental health issues through physical approaches such as chiropractic care. By sharing this knowledge and technique, I hope to offer some relief to other families suffering in similar ways.
